AEO — Answer Engine Optimization for your website

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the work on how exactly your answer is worded. Not «so people know you exist» — that's GEO. It's about making an AI assistant quote your wording, not a competitor's paraphrase, when it answers your customer's question.

What is AEO — Answer Engine Optimization, in plain words

AEO meaning: Answer Engine Optimization is preparing your text so an AI assistant can lift a ready, short answer straight from it and cite you — instead of a competitor's paraphrase. It optimizes for answers, not rankings. You need it when:

  • your site is in Google's top-10, but it's absent from ChatGPT's answers;
  • AI answers on your topic, but cites a competitor or Wikipedia;
  • you have expert content, but it's written as a wall of text with no structure.

Terminology on the market is muddled: AEO is almost always sold bundled as «AEO & GEO», and some use «AIEO» too. So questions like «what is AEO», «AEO meaning» or «AEO vs SEO» stay unanswered. I split these services strictly — the difference between AEO, GEO and SEO is covered in a separate blog article.

Why AI doesn't take your text

92–96% of sources in AI Overview answers don't even rank in the organic top-20, and ~70% of people read only the first third of an answer. Extractability matters as much as position. Here are five reasons a model skips your paragraph.

The paragraph isn't self-contained

To understand it, you must read the previous three. Before: «As mentioned above, this also affects…». After: «Delivery across Kyiv takes 1 day».

The answer is smeared across four paragraphs

A model won't assemble an answer from pieces. Before: the point is in paragraph 4. After: the whole answer in one 40-word paragraph.

No direct answer in the first 40 words

Intro first, point later — and AI takes someone else's text. Before: «This is a complex question…». After: «No, there is no guarantee. Here's why».

A fact with no number, date or source

A model won't risk citing a vague claim. Before: «delivery is fast». After: «delivery in 1–2 days, as of 2026».

The customer's question and your heading use different words

The customer asks «how much does it cost», the text says «pricing of services». After: the heading repeats the customer's question verbatim.

What the work includes

  1. Citation audit — across 20–40 real customer prompts: where AI cites you, a competitor, or no one.
  2. Rebuilding answer structure — I rewrite key paragraphs for self-sufficiency and extractability.
  3. Q&A blocks — from real search questions and your sales, not invented ones.
  4. FAQPage and QAPage markup — where it's appropriate, without cargo-culting.
  5. Fact anchoring — numbers, dates and sources in the paragraphs meant to be cited.
  6. Re-measurement after 6–8 weeks on the same prompts.

Honest about Schema. Markup helps fact extraction, but there's no public proof it directly boosts citation in LLMs. So I don't sell it as a magic button — I do what actually shapes the answer.

What is NOT included

  • external mentions on third-party sites — that's GEO, a separate service;
  • technical crawlability of the site — that's a technical SEO audit;
  • a «top-1 in ChatGPT» guarantee — no such metric exists, and anyone promising it is selling air;
  • mass-generating a FAQ for every page — that's noise, not work.

How much it costs

Fixed prices, no «we'll calculate individually». AEO sits between a one-off audit and a full GEO retainer.

FAQ

What is AEO (AEO meaning)?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: preparing your text so an AI assistant can take a ready short answer from it and cite you, rather than a competitor's paraphrase. It optimizes for answers, not positions — the paragraph level, not the whole site.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO takes a page to the top of Google by position; AEO makes an AI assistant quote your exact wording. SEO works with the site and keywords, AEO with a single paragraph and its extractability. Different jobs that complement each other well.

How is AEO different from GEO?

GEO answers «does AI see me at all» and works with brand presence. AEO answers «does AI take my wording» and works with the structure of a specific text. GEO is the brand level, AEO is the paragraph level.

Do I need AEO if my site is already ranking in Google?

Yes, and that's when it helps most. A Google position doesn't guarantee a mention in ChatGPT or AI Overviews: the model often takes someone else's better-structured text. AEO turns your existing visibility into citations in assistant answers.

How do you measure the result?

I record a baseline across 20–40 of your customers' prompts, then repeat the same queries after the work. The metric is simple and verifiable: the share of answers where your text is quoted, not paraphrased. You see concrete before/after, not abstract reports.

Does AEO work for an online store?

Yes. For a store, category pages, guides and answers about delivery, payment and product choice get cited most. I rebuild exactly those blocks for extractability, so the assistant recommends your store in its answer to the buyer.
