GEO / AEO: 7% of traffic from ChatGPT and ×6.5 growth in 5 months
A local business already gets clients not only from Google but from AI engines. ChatGPT traffic grew from 31 to 201 visits a month and became the #2 channel after organic — with no ads.
About the project
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Project | Muse — muse.wien |
| Niche | Kids' play & party space |
| Market | Vienna, Austria (local demand, German) |
| Observation period | May — October 2026 (5 months) |
| Case focus | GEO / AEO — visibility and traffic from AI search |
| Main AI engine | ChatGPT (~99% of AI traffic) |
The project — Muse (muse.wien), a local business in Vienna: a kids’ play and party space with two locations. Classic local demand: children’s birthdays, hall rental, entertainers, classes. Its main traffic always came from Google (organic + ads).
But analyzing sources revealed a new, fast-growing channel that barely existed a year ago — referrals from AI engines (ChatGPT first of all). This case is about how a business already gets clients from AI search today, and what makes a site visible for it.
Why it matters
Users increasingly ask questions not in the search bar but in ChatGPT and other AI assistants — and get a ready answer with links to specific companies. It’s a new acquisition channel: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — optimizing so AI picks and recommends your business.
The channel is only forming and competition is still low. Whoever lands in AI answers now captures demand ahead of competitors.
Starting point
Baseline AI-traffic as of May 2026:
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| AI traffic / mo | 31 visits |
| AI share of traffic | 3.1% |
| Main AI engine | ChatGPT |
| Dedicated GEO campaign | none run |
What makes a site visible to AI
The AI-traffic growth here is an observed result, not the effect of a separate campaign. These are the factors that make a site visible in AI answers (and that GEO projects strengthen deliberately):
Clear answers right on the pages
Prices, terms, FAQ, specifics of "what / where / how much / for whom". AI pulls structured facts into answers, not fluffy marketing.
Complete service information
Each service is described to fully close the user’s question — AI prefers sources that answer exhaustively.
Technical cleanliness & markup
Clear structure, Schema markup, clean HTML — so AI parsers read and interpret the content correctly.
Strong local signals
City, addresses, multiple locations, NAP consistency — for local queries AI returns local, verifiable answers.
Content for real questions
Pages and copy for the phrasing people actually ask AI — not only Google keywords.
Results

Over 5 months AI traffic grew 6.5× and became the second acquisition channel after organic search (excluding ads). Almost all of it is ChatGPT. October is partial (data through the 21st) but already ahead on share.
Traffic sources in GA4: chatgpt.com as its own channel (~7%)

By month: AI traffic and its share
| Month | AI visits | AI share |
|---|---|---|
| May | 31 | 3.1% |
| June | 60 | 3.7% |
| July | 41 | 2.7% |
| August | 139 | 6.7% |
| September | 201 | 6.5% |
| October* | 171 | 7.0% |
Data source: Google Analytics 4 (traffic sources / channel groups). * October — partial month.
Takeaway
AI search is already a real client-acquisition channel today: in 5 months it grew 6.5× and delivered 7% of all traffic. No dedicated GEO campaign has been run yet — so the potential is bigger. Next up — systematic GEO/AEO work (markup, entities, FAQ, content for AI queries) to lock in presence in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews answers while competition is low.
